Menstrual Charting to prevent Pregnancy
Did you know you are only fertile for 6 days of your whole menstrual cycle?
YUP, pregnancy is only possible during a phase of your menstrual cycle known as OVULATION.
Ovulation is when a matured egg is released from your ovary, in the hope of being fertilised by a sperm.
At every other phase of your menstrual cycle, the egg is tucked up nice and safe, growing inside the ovary.
Now, heres the mind blowing part - the egg released at ovulation lives for only 12-24 hours before it dies, while a sperm's typical lifespan in your body is 3-5 days. Together this is a 6 day window around ovulation where it is possible for you to get pregnant.
Ovulation is generally in the middle of your cycle, depending on your cycle length (around day 14 in a 28 day cycle, around day 17 in a 35 day cycle). For more information on the different phases of the menstrual cycle click here
The Sympto-Thermal Method (STM) monitors your bodies signs and symptoms of ovulation using:
Body-at rest (basal) temperature
♡ Our resting body temperature detects the moment of ovulation and the end of your fertile phase.
Cervical fluid observation
♡ Cervical fluid changes throughout our cycle to either prevent sperm from entering the uterus or transport the sperm for conception. Cervical mucus detects the start of your fertile phase.
Monitoring these two signs of fertility through menstrual charting enables you to become aware of when ovulation is approaching (your fertile phase) as well as when ovulation is over. Once this method has been learnt, it can successfully be used as a form of contraception.
This method of contraception is not difficult to learn, and is 98.2% effective in preventing pregnancy when used correctly. Because I know you'll look it up, a condom is 98% effective ;)
